Understanding the Journey of Inner-City Communities to a Sense of Community and Well-Being

Abstract Details

2016, Doctor of Management, Case Western Reserve University, Weatherhead School of Management.
Our mixed method study examines the possible routes inner-city communities may take to achieve a sense of community and a sense of well-being at the community level. We chose a city in a developing country since it is expected that such cities will increasingly be responsible for global economic growth. Our initial study examines the life experiences of forty residents in two communities which were selected on the basis of their being on opposite ends of the 2014 police crime statistics continuum. A surprising differentiator between the communities was the perceived access to public space—the space that is neither one’s home or work space—such as the streets and sport facilities. This access, created through the intersection of community group activities and the performance of institutional resources, influenced the quality of life and the sense of community. Through the conduct of a survey of 307 residents in two communities, we explored whether our initial appreciation of this differentiator was valid and generalizable. The findings suggest that unfettered access to public space is important to the pursuit of well-being at the community level.
