Abstract
Through three distinctive studies we examine the key factors that influence corporate employees to volunteer in their communities. Our research asks: (1) do employees feel constrained from recruiting beyond their strong-tie personal relationships and into weak-tie employee relationships at the workplace, (2) what are the key factors motivating corporate employees to volunteer in their communities, and (3) what effect does social identity within a group and charismatic recruiting have on an individual’s motives for volunteering. We respond to these questions by applying well-known theories from the fields of sociology and psychology to the practice of corporate volunteerism. Each of the three studies used a distinct inquiry mode: (1) a semi-structured interview process to situate the problem of practice, establish a conceptual model, and formulate the research question which served as the foundation for the qualitative and quantitative studies that followed, (2) a qualitative examination of a conceptual model, and (3) a quantitative study applying survey instruments and structural equation modeling methods. The purpose, methods and conclusions of each of the three studies are presented with a perspective on the collective implications of the research for practitioners.
