On Bandwidth-Constrained Disturbance Rejection Control

Disturbance rejection control (DRC) provides a platform in tackling the persistently challenging problems in control engineering where the system dynamics are complex, uncertain, nonlinear and time-varying. The problems become especially troublesome when the design is bandwidth-constrained because of time-delays or phase lags due to high frequency dynamics. How to address such constraints systematically in the framework of DRC is an open question and the focus of this dissertation. In particular, of the two key components in DRC, namely the rejecter and the controller, we are concerned with, in the rejecter design, how to estimate and cancel the disturbances effectively in the presence of large time-delays. Furthermore, we investigate, in the controller design, how to obtain fast responses without necessarily employing a high bandwidth, by using a combined open- and closed-loop control strategy. Finally, using two pressing engineering problems as the context, the optimization of the rejecter-controller pair in the DRC is systematically investigated and validated in both simulations and experiments. The new solutions are analyzed in the frequency domain and evaluated according to the engineering design criteria.
