Abstract Details

2015, Master of Arts in Speech Pathology and Audiology, Cleveland State University, College of Sciences and Health Professions.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the psychosocial effects of aphasia in African Americans and Caucasians. Additionally, this study aims to provide the potential similarities and differences in the psychosocial effects of aphasia associated with ethnicity and age range. Understanding the psychosocial impact of aphasia bears significance for service provision in that clinicians would be able to fashion treatment protocols specific to the patient’s needs. Currently, there are no known studies that look specifically at the psychosocial adjustment of African Americans secondary to aphasia compared to their Caucasian counterparts. African American and Caucasian adults, ages 35-80 years, living in Cleveland, Ohio were used in this study. Participants suffered 1 or 2 cerebral vascular accidents (CVAs) resulting in aphasia. A pseudo-qualitative paradigm was used to investigate the psychosocial effects of aphasia. Descriptive statistics revealed there are similarities and differences in how African Americans and Caucasians are impacted by aphasia, psychosocially, and the differences in the psychosocial impact of aphasia based on age range.
