Reconfigurable Dual Band Power Amplifiers for Telemetry Applications

Abstract Details

2019, Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), University of Dayton, Electrical and Computer Engineering.
Radio Frequency power amplifiers (PAs) are used in a wide variety of applications that includes cell phones, wireless communications, radar, and electronic warfare systems. Reconfigurability is the key factor to meet the future need of the wireless systems where the same hardware can be used for different frequency bands. The challenge of multiband and multi-standard operation can be met with reconfigurable technologies like ferroelectric varactor devices and Metal-Insulator Transition (MIT) material known as Phase Change Materials (PCMs). The performance and proper functionality of these devices greatly depend on the proper design and efficiency of PA. In this research, the use of tunable components, such as Barium Strontium Titanate (BST) based varactors and vanadium dioxide ( 𝑉𝑂2) based switches are investigated in designing reconfigurable PA circuit. The focus of this research is a concurrent dual-band radio frequency (RF), high-efficiency ( ≥50%) power amplifier (PA) employing 0.25 μm gallium nitride (GaN) technology for multi-band transmitter applications. Various reconfigurable highly efficient PA circuits for the telemetry band have been presented using different technologies based on the designed concurrent dual-band circuit.
