Improving Latinx Parent Engagement: Unlocking the Full Potential of Latinx Students

Abstract Details

2022, Doctor of Education , University of Dayton, Educational Leadership.
The purpose of this study is to identify and explore contributing factors concerning the lack of Latinx parent engagement in the Independent High School community and the impact parent engagement has on the academic performance of their students. This qualitative research study will add to the knowledge base and provide interested school and district leaders with information as they consider school and district needs concerning equity, inclusion and diversity. More specifically, this study will provide high schools with diverse student populations insight into the experiences of Latinx parents and students, how those experiences impact them, and an equity, inclusion and diversity plan designed to address parent and student needs. This study explored the use of funds of knowledge as a means for improving the relationship between Latinx parents and school staff resulting in effective changes in curriculum and instruction designed to meet the needs of Latinx parents and students. Latinx parents from the Independent High School participated in a town hall meeting and two focus groups were conducted to collect qualitative data. The results of the data were reviewed and themes emerged to provide guidance for the construction of an action research plan designed to improve the Latinx experience through equity, inclusion and diversity at Independent High School.
