The Effects of Specular Reflection on Pulsed Infrared Thermography Threshold Crossings

Goettemoeller, Ryan Joseph

Abstract Details

2023, Master of Science in Computer Engineering, University of Dayton, Electrical and Computer Engineering.
A solution to correct for specular reflection in infrared thermography is proposed. This is important in a set of circumstances where the part does not have an emissivity of 1.0. This means that reflected infrared sources can appear where it is not desired. The proposed method involves using a mirror to get the reflected image of the infrared sources along with using the part under observation to create a mask of alpha values that when combined with the reflected image, correct for the undesired specular reflection which can influence threshold crossing times. Experiments performed show the approach working under limited scenarios.
