Abstract Details

2005, Master of Arts in Education, Defiance College, Education.
The purpose of this project was to determine if the use of joumal writing in a secondary mathematics classroom reduced feelings of math anxiety in students and improved their attitudes toward the subject. Seventy-three tenth and eleventh grade students enrolled in a rural Midwest school participated in the study. The students wrote daily in math journals for a six-week time period, responding to various prompts assigned by the researcher. The results of an attitudinal survey administered prior to and following the journal intervention showed decreased levels of math anxiety; however, there was no evidence to support an improvement in student attitudes toward math.
