DIVERSITY IN YOUNG-ADULT LITERATURE AND ITS IMPACT ON SELF-IDENTITY IN MINORITY AND MAJORITY STUDENTS IN THE SECONDARY ENGLISH CLASSROOM

Abstract Details

2019, Doctor of Education (Ed.D.), University of Findlay, Education.
While it is known that reading a diverse base of literature is important for students, little is known about how the diversity in these texts impacts student self-identity. This study examined the impact that diverse literature may have on student self-identity. Twenty-three students participated in literature circles and reflected on how the reading of their texts impacted their self-identity. The Aspects of Identity Questionnaire (AIQ-IV) was used pre and post to reveal any changes in identity formation. Small changes were seen between the pre- and post- tests and a coding of student responses revealed indications of White Fragility and White Fatigue within the majority student group. This research affirmed the use of diverse literature in the classroom.
