Identification of Secondary Attachment Figures in Middle Childhood

Abstract Details

Previous research has focused on who the primary attachment figures are for children in middle childhood, but there has been relatively little research on other important people who may fulfill attachment needs. The goal of the two studies was to identify who children are using as secondary attachment figures and to examine whether who children use varies with certain child characteristics. Children 7-12 years of age either completed an open-ended interview or a more structured interview to help us identify secondary attachment figures. Both studies suggest that peers, and to a lesser extent siblings and grandparents, may serve as secondary attachment figures. The studies also show that the identity and use of secondary attachment figures may vary with certain child characteristics such as age, sibling status, and security with mother. Older children were more likely than younger children to nominate a peer, older siblings were more likely than younger siblings to be used as attachment figures, and more secure children were more likely than less secure children to rate alternative adult figures as comforting when they used them to fulfill attachment needs.
