Abstract
As observed by Knox and Pinch (2000) modern metropolitan areas are often partitioned into multi-purpose governmental and administrative districts. One such multi-purpose metropolitan partitioning is the urban neighborhood. Although difficult to define, neighborhoods are areas with similar demographic, architectural, economic, and arguably social characteristics. Geographers and other social scientists often use urban neighborhoods as areal units of analysis, however, there is little consensus on procedures for meaningfully discerning their spatial bounds. This dissertation tested a new complex conceptualization of neighborhood by Galster using the vernacular neighborhoods in Akron, Ohio. Galster conceptualizes neighborhood as a complex commodity comprised of ten simpler components and purports that the degree of presence of each component can vary spatially. Using a covariance structural analysis framework, Galster's model was evaluated empirically using a highly granular parcel level dataset. The existence of the ten subcomponents was verified with congeneric measurement models and latent variable scores were calculated and mapped to explore their spatial variability. The analysis confirmed the existences and spatial variability of all ten components of Galster's model as well as significant interaction among the components. Galster's conceptualization was extended to produce an alternative regionalization of the vernacular neighborhoods of Akron. This research led to a better empirical understanding of the city's neighborhoods and demonstrated the utility of covariance structural analysis to urban geographical research.
