Abstract Details

While estimates of prison victimization vary, little empirical research has been conducted to determine its prevalence or severity. Three types of victimization occur in prison: physical, psychological and sexual victimization (Byrne & Hummer, 2008b). The current study was designed to identify characteristics that affect the occurrence or reporting of prison victimization. Interviews were conducted with 1,116 male halfway house clients in the State of Ohio in order to examine which characteristics increased the likelihood of victimization. Analyses were conducted in order to find a relationship between the three types of victimization and the subject's high-risk characteristics. Regression analyses indicated that Caucasians, younger inmates, and inmates with less than a high school education were more likely to report victimization. Because victimization can cause psychological trauma, including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and rape trauma syndrome (RTS), it is necessary that further preventative measures are put in place to protect inmates from prison victimization.
