Abstract
My MFA thesis paper examines various challenges while I am fulfilling the role of costume designer for Kent State University’s School of Theater and Dance production of Three Sisters by Anton Chekhov. The director, Mark Monday, has stated that the production’s focal point should be on the internal and external forces which drive the different facets of the family’s interpersonal dynamics through the passage of time. Conceptually, the costume designs will step back from the heavy, dark costumes often associated with this script. My strategy will be to simplify historic details and textured fabric patterns while using a muted color palette in order to emphasize construction techniques used to individualize themes of ‘Hope’ and ‘Hopelessness.’ Challenges of the production include conveying the subtle passage of time and the fading of beauty, hope and color in their lives as they ‘fade’ from their social glory. I need to collaborate closely with the scenic designer, Raynette Smith and the lighting designer Ben Starett to execute this. In order to achieve a cohesive design aesthetic by combining rental costumes, stock items, and built items, the cast on period movement as other challenges include careful preparation particularly designed for actors who have not worked with period costumes. For example, I will provide female actors who have limited experience with period undergarments such as corsets, bum pads and petticoats with temporary undergarments in the early stage of the process. Adapting a period Russian look for a contemporary body will be equally difficult. All of the above processes will culminate in creating a sense of the “language” of the social structure of the period, the first decade of the twentieth century, through the clothing, hairstyles and accessories while subtlety moving the characters forward in time and a successful production.
