Bone tools have been used throughout prehistory, but around A.D. 1000-1650, there was a dramatic increase in their production and use in the Ohio River Valley among Fort Ancient Societies. These Fort Ancient groups utilized bone as the raw material to create a variety of tool classes used in a wide range of activities. Bone tool studies, especially in North America, have been generally overlooked and it is time a systematic analysis of bone tools and their spatial distribution is completed in order to garner more information about the social organization of groups during this period. This thesis will use the collection of bone tools from SunWatch Indian Village in Dayton, Ohio to examine these questions. This assemblage was chosen due to the excellent preservation of bone and the fact that the site is one of the most extensively excavated in region from this time period. A brief background on the evolution and current state of bone tool studies will precede a description and classification of the bone tool assemblage. Following this, the most numerous too classes will be analyzed spatially and statistically to prove that Fort Ancient groups engage in household-level production, with specific areas in the village that are distinctly different than others on the basis of bone tool categories present.
