Abstract
My MFA thesis project was the creation of each of my three thesis roles— The Magistrate in Lysistrata, Andrei in Three Sisters, and Fabian in Twelfth Night. Throughout the development of each role I examined the growing use of technique in my work. This document will chart the use of the Michael Chekhov technique and how I developed the ability to incorporate the technique in my acting workAs I started rehearsals for Lysistrata I also began studying the Michael Chekhov technique under Professor Mark Monday. I found it to be a logical examination of how to make clear and intelligent choices in acting. In developing the role of the Magistrate, I used the technique to guide me in finding basic choices of action and quality. The foundation of the technique (found in Stanislavski’s Method of Physical Action) also forced me to find clear actions and objectives. Chekhov’s use of quality of action (or how the action is done) made my work more specific and led to the true growth of the character. In my second role, Andrei in Three Sisters, I was able to explore even more of the technique through the exploration of atmosphere and polarity. In Andrei I made my first attempt at consciously creating polarity within a character. In this “journey of polarity,” I showed the extremes of Andrei’s nature beginning with his quiet, intellectual side. These choices were in direct opposition of the volatile and strong Andrei shown in Act II. The drastic atmosphere changes in Acts III and IV led me to acting choices of great polarity which helped me find depth and dimension in my characterization. Fabian in Twelfth Night will provide me an opportunity to combine all my knowledge of the Michael Chekhov technique and synthesize it with all the training I have received, including movement and voice. The combination of all my training and technique should allow me to play the character with a basis in reality but true to the expectations of the script and director.
