Hypoxia is a world-wide anthropogenic phenomenon related to pollution. Hypoxia is poorly understood and requires extensive observations. We describe the construction of an inexpensive sensor buoy system, Oxybuoy, designed for long-term unattended oxygen sensor measurements. The technology is available to construct such sensor buoys. However, the market niche is too narrow to justify specialized sensor development by commercial companies. The available equipment is either too expensive or not adequate. We propose to use commercial off-the shelf components: an embedded PC, an optical dissolved oxygen sensor, a temperature sensor, a WiFi transmitter and a satellite transmitter. It’s total cost is around $5,000 to construct, program and test a proof of concept of such sensor. We describe the buoy’s architectural design and three experiments that we carried out to demonstrate its viability: a laboratory test in a water tank with controlled oxygen level, a lake deployment and an extensive electric power consumption test. Our experiments indicate the viability of such an approach to dissolved oxygen monitoring and promise further advances in hypoxia studies.
