A Consequence of Gravity

Lemmon, Andrew D.

Abstract Details

2009, MFA, Kent State University, College of the Arts / School of Art.
A Consequence of Gravity was a sculptural installation that explored issues of site and work interdependence, viewer engagement, material, and process. It existed as a closed system where a moment of equilibrium was achieved and remains in stasis, under a constant, balanced tension. The purpose of this thesis was to resolve several questions in an attempt to inform and expand my sculptural practice. First of all, this project attempted to determine how a viewer could become directly engaged with the work, how their role might be expanded, and how the work might exist synergistically with the gallery site. Secondly, concerns regarding appropriate material use and process employment were addressed. And finally, the place of the self-referential, auratic, and experiential were considered.
