Abstract
The fluid phases of bent-core liquid crystals exhibit remarkable properties, which are quite unlike their more traditional calamitic (rod-like) counterparts, even though the macroscopic orientational order in both systems is characterized by uniaxial symmetry. The aim of this dissertation is to use two techniques – small angle Xray scattering (SAXS) and second harmonic light scattering – to probe the local structure of the nematic phase in certain BCLCs that exhibit the afore-mentioned properties, and to thereby elucidate their structural origin. SAXS data obtained by us (and by other researchers) indicate that, on the scale of 10 – 100 nm, bent-core nematics are composed randomly distributed clusters of molecules with short-range smectic-C order. Since bulk smectic-C phases of BCLCs are typically ferroelectrically or antiferroelectrically layered, the question of internal and/or interfacial noncentrosymmetry associated with small smectic-C clusters in a bent-core nematic is important to address, and SH light scattering is an appropriate tool to do this. As in the SAXS studies, the SH measurements will be contrasted with data obtained on a typical calamitic nematic.
