This study attempts to determine to what extent core music theory sources on harmony are represented by OhioLINK Libraries associated with NASM-accredited music schools in Ohio (National Association of Schools of Music). Focus is principally placed on historical European and American sources from the mid-eighteenth century through early twentieth century, and historical and modern American textbooks from the early twentieth century through present day.
Factors involved in this study include finding out whether the library in question is an ARL (Association of Research Libraries) library, whether or not the institution in question has a separate music library, and also identifying the highest music degree offered by representative institutions. These factors are then discussed within the context of bibliographic searches done in the OhioLINK database and subsequent holdings in these libraries associated with NASM-accredited institutions. Suggestions are also made as to how further or deeper research could be utilized to answer questions about holdings specifically relating to textbooks. Finally, the study attempts to determine the extent to which OhioLINK’s mission and operation is reflected by the representation of sources on harmony in these institutions, and if that representation either adds or detracts from its mission and operation.
