Travel Motivations of Chinese Students in the United States: A Case Study of Chinese Students in Kent State University

Abstract Details

2012, MS, Kent State University, College of Education, Health and Human Services / School of Foundations, Leadership and Administration.
China’s outbound market has been considered the most attractive by many tourism destinations. In addition, China became the leading place of origin for students to the United States. Due to the potential of the student market, research on student travel motivations will be important to the U.S. destination managers that want to attract members of this market segment. However, there is not enough research about Chinese students in the U.S. and their travel motivations. In consideration of the deficient research, this study utilized an online questionnaire to survey the Chinese full-time students in Kent State University, in order to answer four important questions. First, what push factors influence Chinese college students’ decisions to travel in the U.S.? Second, what pull factors influence their choice of destinations? Third, what are their preferred U.S. destinations? Fourth, do demographic characteristics and tourist roles have significant relationships with their motivations? Implications of results will be discussed.
