Abstract Details

2012, MFA, Kent State University, College of Arts and Sciences / Department of English.
This fictional short story collection centers around “dark” motherhood stories. As the mother of two little boys under three years old, some of these stories play on my worst fears as a mother, while others are completely outside my own experience. In “Jayne Types,” a woman mourning the death of her child hears strange noises from a baby monitor while vacationing in a remote cottage. In “Gravida,” a woman will go to any length to bear a son, while in “Misconceptions,” a woman deals with life after an early miscarriage. In “Company,” a young girl discovers first hand how difficult life with a special needs child can be. The stories are "dark," but contain moments of lightness and hope.
