Abstract Details

2013, MFA, Kent State University, College of the Arts / School of Art.
While the vessel’s rich history is intrinsically connected to function, I am interested in exposing the energy and humanity in the vessel. My thesis work, Anthropomorphia, is about exploring the human-like quality of each piece and about how the different pieces relate to each other in a connected system. In my work, each piece is a metaphor for different persons and personalities types. I give the personality aspect physicality by using folds, wrinkles (in combination with the form) to achieve the desired energy of the piece. Color is added to enhance the mood and energy of the piece. While each piece is created to expose individual characteristics, Anthropomorphia is meant to challenge the independence of the vessel by removing it from the traditional display of the pedestal. By suspending the work in a system of pulleys and wires, a web is created that shows a continuous cycle of interdependency. This display transforms the work from being separate identities to parts whole unit. I use a traditional metalsmithing technique and move it into the contemporary art field by the unexpected display method, which allows for the installation to be read on several different levels.
