The use of authentic English language documents to teach ESL students is common, but often limited. An instructor developing a content base on which to teach, in the case of this study literary texts, allows students to understand the possibilities of language and textual reading/writing as leading to critical thinking in a second language capacity. This study relied on the second language composition classroom acting as a transnational fulcrum, on which the students could balance their expatriate experiences with those of their home cultures. Having come to the United States to be undergraduate students, reading textual representations of expatriate life eased the process of acculturating to certain second-culture academic standards. A combination of composition instruction rooted in textual examination inspired critical thinking in a second language that led to the writing of college level essays. Ernest Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises was pedagogically implemented, in combination with historical and cultural articles relating to 1920s expatriatism, to spur a second language critical thinking processes of how text act as cultural representation while fulfilling the requirements of a college composition classroom. Using a second language text, that asked students to reflect on their own transnational existence as expatriates, developed a classroom environment where critical and historical/cultural reading of text successfully influenced the writing of thesis-based essays.
