Neoliberalism and Same-Sex Desire in the Fiction and Public Cultures of India after 1991

Abstract Details

2013, PHD, Kent State University, College of Arts and Sciences / Department of English.
In 1991, the Indian economy underwent an extensive liberalization, with changes like greater deregulation, privatization, and dismantling of welfare-state social provisions becoming commonplace. In the following years, representations of same-sex desire became more visible and more prevalent in the cultural and literary landscape of India. This dissertation views these two developments to be interrelated, and examines how the sociocultural sphere is often determined, influenced, and brought into being by socioeconomic factors. I analyze four key texts (Ash Kotak’s Hijra, a British-Indian play; Neel Mukherjee’s Past Continuous, a novel written in English; Tarun Mansukhani’s Dostana, a Hindi film; and Tilottama Majumdar’s Chander Gaye Chand, a novel written in Bengali) to argue that the representation of same-sex desire in India after 1991 emphasizes, in different ways, the neoliberal ideology of individuality and personal responsibility. I conclude by noting that representations of same-sex desire that endorse the neoliberal ideology do not forward the cause of social and economic justice, or the equality of non-heterosexual people.
