Data Curation Perspectives and Practices of Researchers at Kent State University’s Liquid Crystal Institute: A Case Study

Abstract Details

2013, MLIS, Kent State University, College of Communication and Information / School of Information.
This study aimed to improve understanding of data curation requirements of scientists in small-science disciplines via a case study approach that examined discipline-specific data curation requirements of one academic research institute, Kent State University’s Liquid Crystal Institute. Through the data collection techniques of online surveying and in-depth interviews, the investigator gathered information about the data management practices and perspectives of LCI researchers. The investigator found that although it is true that many small-science disciplines have become data-intensive, liquid crystal research values the computer codes that produce data more than the data itself. The raw data is useful only as it can be quantified and replicated by the computer codes. Other important findings include: 1) the discovery of a reciprocal relationship between perceived data characteristics and the researchers’ perceptions of their data management needs; and 2) that the researchers’ data management practices have developed in response to short-term data management needs as well as their perceptions about the nature and usefulness of their data products. The study’s results show that researchers at the Liquid Crystal Institute have few incentives at this time to implement standardized data management (curation) procedures or to develop collaboration and connections that could assist them in improving their data management practices to achieve long-term preservation goals.
