Development and Validation of Two Treatment Process and Outcome Scales for the MMPI-2-RF

Abstract Details

2014, PHD, Kent State University, College of Arts and Sciences / Department of Psychological Sciences.
The purpose of this study was to develop and validate content-based treatment outcome scales derived from the MMPI-2-RF item pool in a clinical sample Given that psychotherapy is comprised of an intimate interpersonal exchange between the client and the therapist and that the client’s characteristics likely influence the development of the therapeutic alliance, content-based scales that provide an indication of psychotherapy outcome during initial assessments will provide useful information about the individual seeking treatment to clinicians. Results of this study indicated that it is possible to construct reliable and internally consistent scales that assess constructs that are conceptually related to psychotherapy outcome (e.g., motivation to address problems, trust, hostility, and sociability). However, the resulting scales had only modest external validity and did not add significantly beyond what can be accounted for by existing conceptually relevant MMPI-2-RF scales when predicting therapist-rated process/outcome variables (i.e., the number of therapy appointments the client attended, and therapist ratings of the clients' readiness for termination, compliance, activity, and success in treatment).
