INNOVATIONS IN CLASSICAL SCULPTURE :STILL I RISE

Abstract Details

2014, MFA, Kent State University, College of the Arts / School of Art.
My thesis show, Still I Rise, is a work executed using traditional sculpture techniques and presented in a contemporary manner, The materials chosen are fired clay, terracotta and low fire commercial glazes. The works are of a figurative nature, which are naturalistic portraits of my wife and I. The larger sculpted pieces are of the same material and style but are full figures of my wife and daughter. The portraits and figures are modeled so that each is separated into a front part and a back part, which is then glazed, utilizing random patterning of the painting of the glazes. In what would be considered the interiors of the separate sculptures. There are also included four pen and ink drawings placed in natural wood frames so that the earthen sculptures are complimented by these natural frames. The show and thesis paper are an expression of my love and appreciation for the time that I was permitted to be near my wife, Mary and my daughter, Deborah. They have both died and are missed greatly. I was very fortunate to have been allowed to live the life that I was given.
