Al Jihad Al Kabir

Syed, Idris Kabir

Abstract Details

2014, MFA, Kent State University, College of the Arts / School of Art.
My thesis title is Al Jihad Al Kabir. While most in the west think that Jihad refers to an armed struggle (this is the lesser Jihad in Islam), the meaning of my show title refers to a spiritual struggle (which is the greater Jihad), as well as incorporating my given middle (and most commonly used) name. My show is a historical narrative. I utilize the poetry of the 14th century weaver/poet Kabir Das, as well as historical paintings from the time period and modern comics for the images which are glazed onto a ceramic tile wall installation, plates and vases.
