Abstract
This thesis aims to clarify the role of topographic variation in the promotion and maintenance of invertebrate diversity and distributions. First, I explore the mechanisms by which topographic variation influences both spatial and temporal microclimate variation. I hypothesized that topographic variation reduces temporal fluctuations in microclimate by introducing primary attributes that moderate climate conditions, and this stabilization controls invertebrate distributions. In addition, I hypothesized that topographic variation diversifies microclimate, increasing habitat availability and promoting invertebrate diversity. In this thesis, I examined patterns in microclimate spatial distribution and temporal variability and determined that topographic variation is responsible for increasing microsite diversity and stabilizing microclimate. Next, I investigated the impact of topographic variation on microclimate spatial diversity and its subsequent moderation of invertebrate diversity. In the final chapter, I explored the role of topographic variation in preserving species distributions through its temporal influence on microclimate. I analyzed the necessity of topographic variation for Anabrus simplex (Mormon cricket) abundance in years with declining density. Overall, this work illustrates the significance of topography and topographic variation as a mediator of diversity and species distribution through its spatial and temporal control of microclimate and subsequent influence on habitat composition and suitability.
