This thesis examines the tableaux-style performances of Vanessa Beecroft through several critical lenses. Her spectacular installations of live figures within a gallery or museum framework elicit multiple critical readings. Through careful scrutiny of the development of her work from 1993-2001, one can identify shifts in formal and process-based aspects of the work that support interpretation of her work as inspired by and critical of the mediated image. Beecroft’s performances acknowledge histories of Performance and Body Art, Minimalism, and Relational Art while effectively circumventing traditional readings as such. By effectively collaging formal and conceptual aspects of each of these genres, the performances provide an arena in which one can deconstruct the way images are framed, interpreted, and rendered live. The relationship of the work to various styles of photographic practice and corresponding critical theory elicits further scrutiny of how images mediate, replicate, and inform our contemporary society. As her work matures, the simulacral nature of the performance is heightened to the point of pure spectacle. This conflation of the live embodied experience with the staged simulacral image models a society where spectacle has surpassed referential meaning.
