Research suggests that most individuals engage in some form of casual sexual relationship or experience (CSRE) within their lifetime. Further, there is evidence that CSRE engagement has important implications for psychological adjustment and alcohol use. In particular, CSRE engagement may be associated with higher levels of depression and alcohol use and lower levels of self-esteem. However, the direction of these associations is unclear. The current study addresses limitations in the previous research by investigating the longitudinal associations between CSRE engagement and depression, self-esteem, and alcohol use in a community sample of young adults. Specifically, a series of cross-lagged panel models were compared to determine which provided the best fit: a model in which (a) CSRE engagement predicted adjustment/alcohol use, (b) adjustment/alcohol use predicted CSRE engagement, or (c) there were reciprocal effects. Additionally, gender differences in the associations were examined. Results suggest that there are cross-sectional associations between CSRE engagement and alcohol use, but that associations between CSRE engagement and depression/self-esteem are minimal.
