Abstract Details

2015, MA, Kent State University, College of the Arts / School of Music, Hugh A. Glauser.
Dragon Fantasy is an original composition for large orchestra. Its single movement is about 23 minutes long. The general style of the piece could be described as a sort of fusion between the idioms of Stravinsky, Hindemith, and Carl Ruggles (especially in Sun-treader). The piece has several motives that reoccur throughout, including the use of pedals, melodic perfect fourths and descending minor seconds, and a brief snippet of the chorus to the song Puff the Magic Dragon, made famous by the band Peter, Paul, and Mary. The structure of the piece is not direct, but it is constructed around three identical climaxes that occur at important points in the piece.
