Expressive typography in motion graphics were used to explore vocabulary learning for ESL students. The three widely used teaching methods include: behaviorism, phonics, and grammar translation. The behaviorism method of language is learned through mimicry and memorization of forms and phonics transcription, which is nothing more than a written record of the sounds of a spoken language. Grammar translation is where students learn lists of vocabulary, verb paradigms, and grammatical rules, and does provide a solid teaching foundation for teaching ELL. Although there are struggles with students learning a second language, more research in methods is being explored. Expressive typography and semiotics paired through the strategy of motion graphics could have positive effects on the ELL community. With today's multi-tasking lifestyle, tests where done on how students learning ESL can have a personal experience via an iPad vs. other people watching the same program without a captioning system.
