Does "Knowledge" Equal Approval? An Exploratory Analysis of Physical and Mental Chronic Illness, Health Literacy, and Stigma

Stigma, especially among those individuals suffering from mental illness, is a relatively well-explored topic. However, public stigma of mental illness in relation to physical illness stigma is lacking, specifically with regards to health literacy (how much an individual actually understands about a specific illness and where they can get more information and/or future help). Using a nationally representative survey comprising data on perceptions, opinions, chronic illness, and believed health literacy this study explores the stigmatization of four chronic illnesses (two mental: Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and Depression, and two physical: Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome). Results indicate that the higher an individual’s believed health literacy is for physical chronic illness the more likely they are to stigmatize sufferers of chronic illness overall. While the opposite occurs for mental illness, with the higher an individual’s believed health literacy for mental chronic illness, the less likely they are to stigmatize sufferers of chronic illness. These results and more, as well as ways to reduce stigmatization are further discussed.
