A Study of the Behavior of Chaos Automata

Abstract Details

2016, PHD, Kent State University, College of Arts and Sciences / Department of Computer Science.
Chaos automata are a rich class of models that combine iterated function systems with finite state automata. This merger creates models capable of transforming sequences of input characters into fractal images where the iterated function system component allows the generation of an image and the finite state automaton component allows a memory of character input. The transformation process creates a single point for each character in the input sequence, and the collection of points makes up the generated image. As chaos automata have many different factors that influence the image generation, this work explores some of the features of automaton architecture, function parameters, and input sequences to unravel the complex nature in how chaos automata behave. To help in the process of analyzing chaos automata behavior, quantitative measures were examined to determine their effectiveness in comparing the differences and similarities of generated images. An extensive software system was written to generate and analyze the resulting visualizations for a wide variety of architectural and input variations. In addition, potential methods for clustering images generated by chaos automata into groups of common appearance are briefly reviewed.
