Although employment generally acts as a protective factor against criminal behavior for adults, the relationship is less clear among adolescents. Substance use measures are often aggregated with other crime and delinquency measures, further obscuring research findings. Using a sample of high school seniors from a recent wave of an ongoing data collection effort, this paper examines predictors of alcohol use among adolescents in the United States. Alcohol use measures are disaggregated to explore potential differences in the mechanisms driving alcohol use versus those driving binge drinking. To address the suggestions of previous research, a potential mediating influence of peer alcohol consumption is also considered. Findings from the analysis reveal differences in the strength of predictors when consumption is disaggregated. Employment was significant in predicting decreases in the binge drinking measure, but not significant when alcohol use was the outcome. Peer alcohol use significantly predicted both behaviors, but the mediation hypothesis was not supported for either outcome measure. Results indicate a potential selection effect may be working to drive employment and the studied outcomes.
