Abstract Details

2017, MFA, Kent State University, College of Arts and Sciences / Department of English.
The Winner is a character study that integrates elements of science fiction and road trip genres. Its inspiration grew from the rising influence of gamification within our culture and the author's desire to explore what sort of society would result if every action we conducted was incentivized and scored. That exploration, however, is secondary to the novel’s study of Ari (a coldly logical man from the Harbor, a city that operates on a wholly gamified culture) and Cami (a highly impulsive and emotional young woman from one of the few towns that exist outside the city’s borders). In its reconciliation of these two characters, the narrative attempts to address questions regarding love, loyalty, justice, and the nature of community. Far from attempting to provide definitive answers, the author positions the characters in such a way that their differing worldviews become a frequent source of conflict and contention, giving both the characters and the reader an opportunity to question even their most ardently held beliefs. The Winner is a work that champions the idea that individuals can evolve and grow but at the same time recognizes that the world will not always reward those who open their minds.
