Location based Educational mobile application design and implementation

Abstract Details

2017, MS, Kent State University, College of Arts and Sciences / Department of Computer Science.
Location-based services (LBS) use real-time geo-data from a mobile device or smartphone to provide information, entertainment or security to users. Researchers came up a research project that developing a mobile application based on LBS to provide educational content to users. In this thesis, we will design and implement this application according to specific research requirements. Developing this mobile application will be based on iOS platform. By applying LBS in this application, it will provide park visitors immersive and educational experience. In addition, this application will collect anonymous user data to the backend server for future analyze. From research aspect, scientists who use this application will access anonymous user data to monitor activities within parks and improve educational content in future. Scientists, park rangers, and park visitors will be able to use this application to provide GPS related information at a specific position to researchers. In this application, there are multi-educational content systems working with location services and multiple scenarios using location services. In order to make battery efficient in the application, the different scenarios location services will be applied in different designs and implementations. In this thesis, we will discuss different algorithms and implementations of location services at different using scenarios and explore the science learning data flow from server to the mobile application. Learning content plays a significant role in the mobile application, thus thesis will introduce multi-methods to post and pull data through RESTful API and mobile user interface(UI) to visualize learning content. Owing to the Internet does not access at everywhere of the parks, the application is designed to work offline completely. This thesis will briefly discuss offline caching system and approaches of caching data.
