Abstract Details

2018, MS, Kent State University, College of Education, Health and Human Services / School of Foundations, Leadership and Administration.
The purpose of this research was to evaluate US college students’ travel decisions to proximate Canada, Cuba or Mexico according to their travel motivations, sensation seeking behavior and perceived risk of the specific destination. The premise of the study was that travelers with certain sensation seeking personality traits have different motivations, which impacted their considerations to visit different destinations. Travelers would evaluate the destinations’ characteristics and develop certain risk perceptions. When travelers made a decision to visit a destination, it was assumed that they would select different risk-reduction strategies. Data were collected from undergraduate students at Kent State during December 2016. Participants were asked to complete an online survey. One-way ANOVA and Chi-square statistical analysis were conducted, and the results revealed that traveler’s destination choice was significantly associate with their sensation seeking level and travel motivation. And their destination choice would lead to the action of risk reduction. Risk was also proved as a negative factor in the case of tourism based on the destination choice for both male and female. It is suggested that tourist destinations should address issues that cause travel destination risk and tourism operators should offer low-risky products to attract more visitors.
