Scholarly debates about the origins and formation of the Black Arts Movement (BAM) of the 1960s and 1970s rarely give credit to the role of Elijah Muhammad’s teachings in the emergence of the movement. The rise of BAM started right after Malcolm X’s death and has been largely attributed to the secular understanding of black nationalism that he developed after his separation from Muhammad in 1964. Despite this rupture, a considerable number of BAM’s writings endorse the black consciousness tenets of the Nation of Islam (NOI). In addition, many of these writings celebrate Malcolm X’s twelve years of work and activism in the NOI. This dissertation discusses how the NOI’s black consciousness program shaped the aesthetic sensibilities of the movement’s poets and playwrights in their fights against anti-black racism. It demonstrates how Amiri Baraka, Sonia Sanchez, and other writers of BAM infused many elements and themes of the NOI’s teachings into their works as a strategy to mobilize both African American intellectuals and masses to dismantle the distorted images that the dominant culture constructed about them. Their writings also urged African Americans to confront any views of integration and assimilation and to fathom the idea that their national independence was the best solution to the race problem. Therefore, this dissertation demonstrates the necessity and the benefits of temporarily employing and manipulating identity politics as a means to achieve social, political and cultural goals. Moreover, it provides a thorough analysis of many African American literary texts of the 1960s and 1970s that have been almost forgotten or have received little critical attention.
