Grape Flasks of Third-Century Cologne: An Investigation into Roman Glass and Dionysus

For my thesis work I have conducted research into a grape shaped flask found in Cologne, Germany that is currently on display at the museum in that town. Precious small information is available for the object and my thesis examines the social, cultural and religious relationship represented by the piece in retrospect to the owner. Found in a grave at a specific location in Cologne, I have dedicated a large portion of my writing to the investigation in the possible gender of the individual and what style of funeral ceremony was common at the time of the item’s fabrication. The first section of my text outlines the history of Cologne both prior to, and during, the occupation of the Romans. The following chapter outlines the glassworks and production within the city. With this I make the argument that the item I am examined is of a higher quality than another piece of similar make and time frame in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. The latter portion of my paper details the potential burial styles found in common use in third century Cologne and what style of funeral ceremony I believe to be attributed to the deceased because of the feminine gender associated with items of similar nature. It includes the relationship of the female to the Greek/Roman god Dionysus/Bacchus due to the overall shape of the form and the cult ties to Roman women. The final section details the religious relational aesthetics implemented by the piece in the daily life of the owner. It shall also include the intermingling of cultural identities, pagan and early Christian, and its influences on the minimalism of the piece and/or the symbolism present in the object and how this it relates to the Roman minimalist movement and the ever-encroaching element of Christianity.
