RECONSTRUCTING CAMBODIAN GENOCIDE IN DIGITAL HUMANITIES: A SPATIAL NETWORK ANALYSIS OF CONFESSIONS AND ARRESTS IN THE MINISTRY OF COMMERCE

Abstract Details

2018, MA, Kent State University, College of Arts and Sciences / Department of Geography.
Study of genocide is the key to preventing the repetition of genocide. To date, topics of enhancing digital humanities have been applied in many fields, but they have not been applied to the field of genocide and mass atrocities. This research draws a prototype of a research framework to investigate patterns in the confessions of victims and provide a better understanding how genocide works. It also develops a new method of integrating quantitative with qualitative data. Specific answers by examining the confessions extracted in S-21. What functions did the Ministry of Commerce play during the Khmer Rouge period? What were the social status and social relationships among employees of the Commerce Ministry? Who was arrested earlier or later, where were they arrested, and why? The former security-center in Cambodia known as S-21 was a place of interrogation and detention run by the Khmer Rouge. More than 20,000 prisoners were arrested, tortured, and forced to confess to find networks and line of traitors. As the result of utilizing 15 key confessions, the present study indicates that among 935 names, 380 (or 40.64 %) were arrested, the majority from the Northwestern Zone and Phnom Penh within 1977. This finding provides a provisional step towards a more thoroughly empirical network space–time analysis in the Cambodian genocide, considering as a significant footprint that can be applied to other incidents of mass violence such as the Holocaust and genocidal actions in Armenia, Bosnia, Rwanda, and Darfur as well as the dictatorship in Guatemala.
