With the exceptional advances in wearable devices’ capabilities to monitor users' daily activities, privacy concerns increase for the smartwatch users who must disclose their sensitive information to have access to application services. Studies state that collected information, even in their aggregated form, is sufficient to infer users’ behavior. Therefore, sharing such information may lead to privacy leakage not expected by the users. This research proposes a privacy-aware layer to protect smartwatch users' sensitive information. A graphical user interface is designed to represent data privacy taxonomy elements. With this graphical user interface (GUI), smartwatch users can express their privacy preferences for each application. Moreover, a user privacy protector layer is built on the top of the operating system to receive application requests to access sensors information and enforce privacy policies as defined by the data collector and smartwatch user. We used Tizen platform to perform two user studies. First user study aimed to investigate the current security and privacy model in smartwatches. The goal of the second user study was to examine the efficiency of the proposed layer. A survey was conducted to study participants’ privacy feelings toward the proposed privacy-aware layer and to measure the demand for such tool and its usability.
