STUDY OF LOCAL ATOMIC ORDER AND DISORDER IN Ni-Cr AND Ni-V ALLOYS

In this thesis, I study the atomic ordering in Ni-Cr alloys. Several Ni-Cr samples with different concentrations were prepared and investigated by a neutron diffraction experiment. The data were collected at NOMAD at the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The obtained pair distribution function (PDF) was analyzed with the PDFgui software. The PDF analysis reveals the structure parameters, the crystalline quality and the atomic positions of the samples. This indicates that Ni-Cr is also a good example of a solid solution similar to Ni-V if the samples are prepared with a specific annealing protocol.
