Kids! On Race: How teaching the evolutionary story of human skin color can challenge children to question arbitrary categories of race and the myth of white supremacy in grade school

Abstract Details

Crystal Reedy and Dr. Spurlock of Kent State University designed a class to see if using unique artwork could allow Ohio students in grades 5 through 7 to learn key points in the evolutionary story of human skin color, which is often material reserved for college-level courses. A total of 126 students participated in the study in the Cleveland area. The skin color story involves vitamin D, calcium, folate, and their relationship to ultra-violet radiation, which played important roles in the variation of skin color we see in the world today. To assess whether students learned this material effectively or not, at the beginning and end of each class an 8-question survey was given. Results of the study concluded that students not only learned the material well, but also seemed to benefit from discussion about the social construct of “race” and the arbitrary nature of socially constructed racial categories.
