Abstract Details

2019, MS, Kent State University, College of Education, Health and Human Services / School of Health Sciences.
In today's society, there is a growing trend of body image dissatisfaction among young adults. Furthermore, college athletes are subject to increased body image dissatisfaction due to the demand put on these students. Intuitive eating (IE) is a proven beneficial mental and physiological approach to health that relies on internal body cues regarding hunger and satiety and has been seen to be related to body appreciation (BA). The purpose of this study was to examine IE practices and BA among male and female NCAA athletes. Participants were male and female student athletes at Kent State University who were over the age of 18 years and were not previously diagnosed with an eating disorder or disordered eating. The retrospective data included three surveys completed by participants: a demographic survey, the Intuitive Eating-2 Scale (IES-2), and the Body Appreciation Scale-2 (BAS-2). The current study found a significant difference in IES-2 (t(266)=-2.95, p < 0.05) and BAS-2 (t(262)=-4.0, p < 0.05) scores between males and females, suggesting males are more likely to eat intuitively and have greater BA compared to female student-athletes. A significant relationship was discovered between IES-2 and BAS-2 scores for both male (r=.41, p > 0.001) and female (r=.53, p > 0.01) student-athletes indicating a relationship between eating habits and body image perceptions. The findings of the present study suggest those who surround student-athletes (i.e. coaches, athletics trainers, teammates, etc.) should change the focus to health related to sport, rather than body size.
