The Aesthetics of Representation

Giambroni, Caitlin A

Abstract Details

2019, MFA, Kent State University, College of Communication and Information / School of Visual Communication Design.
Designers are contributors to place through projects such as city branding and identity, environmental graphic design, and creative place-making. It is beneficial for designers to understand the relationship between places and people, particularly how the places they are working in represent (or overlook) the many people who live within them. Due to the way they are built, places are often designed to exclude and ignore marginalized voices. The heart of participatory design is equal distribution of power, and therefore has the potential to aid designers in creating and contributing to place more responsibly This thesis reimagines the role of the designer in place-making and investigates, through critical making exercises and process analysis, the potential for participatory design methods to assist in making places of broader representation.
