Understanding Innovation in Art Education

Abstract Details

2020, MA, Kent State University, College of the Arts / School of Art.
To understand the manifestation of innovation-based learning in the art education classroom, 12 art teachers were interviewed to answer the research question: What is innovation and how can it be used in the art education classroom? Based upon qualitative data from the participants’ responses, innovation is defined as the process of creating original, creative and tangible works of art that are made for a specific artistic intent. Innovation occurs when students are given freedom during the creative process to think independently. However, not every art lesson results in an innovative outcome, but innovative thinking skills may still be at play. These innovative skills include but are not limited to problem-solving, creative thinking, healthy risk-taking and experimentation. Challenges that arise from teaching to innovation include negative attitudes and resource constraints. To combat these problems, the teachers use their own innovation to source nontraditional materials and find ways in which to engage and motivate students. Based on this research, innovation can connect to school district goals and it benefits all student ability levels, student learning, and progress for life.
