2 Essays on Firm Performance in Foreign Environments

Essay 1 Abstract Unlike primary boycotts where firms can address the underlying issue, firms are not able to address the issues that precipitate secondary boycotts. This study identifies the appropriate firm tactics to mitigate the negative effects of a secondary boycott on firm revenue: distraction where firms introduce new information to divert consumer attention away from the issue, and persuasive refutation where firms directly address the issue. I argue that the effectiveness of these tactics is based on the degree of impact of a secondary boycott - the salience of the boycott to consumers and the amount of exposure that consumers have to the boycott. The results indicate that when boycott issue salience is high, firms that deploy distractor tactics enjoy higher revenue and when repeated exposure is high, firm who utilize persuasive refutation tactics achieve higher revenue. When both issue salience and repeated exposure are high, firms who utilize distractor tactics experience higher revenue than firms who use persuasive refutation tactics. Essay 2 Abstract International Entrepreneurs (IEs) take on a substantial amount of risk when venturing into foreign environments. In order to lower their risk, IEs try to access specialized information. Past research suggests that corruption is one way that IEs access this information and can thereby increase their firm’s performance. This study examines how the host institutional uncertainty and the IEs’ motivation to use the information, influences the positive relationship between information obtained through corruption and an IE’s firm performance. The positive effect of corruption propensity on international entrepreneurs’ firm performance is greater for entrepreneurs entering countries with higher levels of institutional uncertainty and for entrepreneurs with higher levels of motivation to use the information. The results are obtained through a 5-year panel study of IE ventures in 9 countries in the MENA region.
