When considering development, most often attention is paid to the progression seen in utero and within the first few years of life, where changes are both rapid and dramatic. This neglects a wide range of percepts that can continue to develop throughout childhood and adolescence, even into early adulthood. Auditory perception is one such skill thought by many to be mature quite early on, as young children learn to both understand and produce speech with a fairly high degree of competency. This fails to capture the entire picture of development however and there is increasing research showing that the maturational timeline of audition can actually be quite prolonged. Understanding the developmental trajectory of auditory perception is of high importance as abilities that are not mature until quite late can be particularly sensitive to developmental perturbations, such as hearing loss. If we do not understand what the normal maturational trajectory looks like, then we cannot identify and intervene when problems arise. The work presented here aims to explore both the maturational trajectory of human perceptual development from late childhood to early adulthood along with neural encoding in juvenile and adult A1 of Mongolian gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus). I will explore the maturation of two auditory percepts important for our understanding of speech and language: 1) duration discrimination and 2) gap detection with varying gap onset times. Better understanding of both perceptual and neural abilities will allow for a more complete picture of adolescent development and provide opportunities for future work to explore early interventions for percepts critical for development of speech and language abilities.
